The same clients, week after week
You are matched with clients and you keep them. You learn a household, a routine and a person, rather than starting again at a new address every shift. Caregivers tell us this is the single biggest difference from agency work they have done before.
Visits long enough to do the job
Our shortest booking is four hours. There is time to cook something proper, get the household straight and actually sit down with someone — instead of racing a checklist and leaving.
An owner who has done the training
Amardeep spent over eleven years teaching and training home care support workers before founding Kinship. When you ring with a difficult situation, you are talking to someone who understands the work from the inside.
Local work, close to home
We staff from within the communities we serve, so you are visiting families near where you live rather than crossing the region between visits.
What we look for
Kinship provides non-medical companionship and home support, so we are not hiring for hands-on personal care. What we are hiring for is harder to put on a résumé.
Reliability above everything
Turning up when you said you would, on the difficult weeks as well as the easy ones. For a client living alone, a caregiver who is late is not an inconvenience — it is the whole afternoon.
Genuine interest in people
The willingness to ask about the photographs on the wall, and to listen to the answer more than once. Much of this job is company, and company cannot be faked for four hours.
Steadiness
Being the same person on a hard day as on an easy one. Clients living with dementia in particular rely on that consistency far more than on anything else we do.
Practical competence at home
Cooking a proper meal, keeping a house in order, managing a shop and a schedule. Ordinary domestic skill, done well and without fuss.
A driving licence, for most roles
A good deal of what we do involves driving to appointments and errands. Not every role requires it, but most do.
Language skills, warmly welcomed
Being able to speak with a client in their first language changes their week. Tell us what you speak — Punjabi, Hindi, Tagalog, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Farsi and others are all regularly asked for.
Screening: the BC Criminal Record Review Program
Every Kinship caregiver must clear a criminal record check through the BC Criminal Record Review Program before working with a client. This is a requirement and there are no exceptions to it.
The check is specific to working with vulnerable adults, and we will walk you through the process — it is a normal part of joining and not something to be anxious about if you have nothing to declare.
Beyond the record check, Amardeep interviews every caregiver personally and calls references herself. The process is slower than most agencies', deliberately.
